Welcome to the McMaster University Department of Surgery

William Orovan

This year has been a year of accelerated expansion, growth and redevelopment in the Department of Surgery. 

Since the appointment of Dr. Susan Reid as the inaugural Associate Chair, Education, many initiatives have been put in place by our faculty as outlined in the Education webpage, including the new STEP program (Surgical Teaching Education Program) the international surgery desk headed by Dr. Brian Cameron, the surgeon scientist program headed by Dr. Sheila Singh and the Women in Surgery program led by Dr. Victoria Avram

Our research success continues to grow with CIHR trials held by:

Recent Awards, Honours and Successes

  • Dr. Mehran Anvari is a recipient of the  ORION Leadership Award which is a provincial award which recognizes the achievements of an individual in either the public or private sector, for his or her significant contribution to advancing research, education, science, or discovery through the development and/or application of innovative information and communications technologies.
  • Dr. James Bain received the 2010 PAIRO Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award for McMaster University. This well-recognized award established by the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO) enables residents to nominate clinical teachers who have excelled in their role.
  • Dr. Stephan Foster received the 2010 Royal College Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award for his commitment in providing high-quality medical treatment in Lubango, Angola. Dr. Foster continues to provide high-quality medical treatment in a country ravaged by more than 27 years of civil war.
  • Dr. Mohit Bhandari  and the SPRINT Team were awarded the 2010 Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Clinical Research Award for their manuscript “Setting a New Benchmark for Collaborative Trials in Trauma: The Rationale, Design and Execution of the Study to Prospectively Evaluate Intramedullary Nails in Tibial Shaft Fractures (SPRINT)" Dr. Bhandari accepted this award and presented the work at the 2010 Annual Meetings of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Research Society held in New Orleans on March 9th and 10th.
