Geriatric Psychiatry Program (Service of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton Mental Health and Addictions Program)
General Description and Overview
There are approximately 200,000 seniors in our catchment area. Our program offers inpatient, outpatient, outreach consultation in a wide variety of clinical settings including the long term care centre. The program was designed to meet the needs of older adults with :
- behavioural and mental health issues associated with cognitive impairment
- late onset psychiatric illness
- longstanding psychiatric illness complicated by age related dysfunction
- medical illness complicated by associated with psychiatric and/or behavioural dysfunction
- substance abuse disorders
- complex needs of the frail elderly
- family and caregiver burden
Components of the program
- Inpatient services
- 20 beds on the Geriatric Behavioural Unit
- Beds for the elderly on the Acute Inpatient Service
- Inpatient/Outpatient services in Hamilton, Niagara, Halton, Brant County and Haldimand
Our model embraces the concept of team based collaborative care, working in a shared care model with primary care providers who provide evidence-based psychiatric care. It is part of McMaster University teaching hospital committed to providing evidence based teaching learners from a variety of backgrounds; provide clinical care in an evaluative framework and to actively participate in university research initiatives.
