Professor and Associate Chair (Research), Department of Pediatrics

Clinicians and basic scientists within Pediatrics work collaboratively in research projects that have immediate application to improving child health.

Leading edge research is conducted in areas such as longitudinal, prospective investigations into the early origins of major chronic diseases such as obesity, arteriosclerosis, asthma and allergy and osteoporosis; childhood disability and mental health; prematurity; quality of life in many childhood diseases; and neurometabolic problems or epilepsy. Excellent research facilities include laboratories for lab bench science and research in animal models, clinical assessment rooms, body composition laboratories and highly trained research staff. The environment of university and hospital within one building fosters opportunities for training in research for undergraduate science and medical students, pediatric residents, clinical and research post-doctoral fellows and students enrolled in masters and doctoral graduate programs. Furthermore, the close proximity of the academic/hospital environment provides unique multi-disciplinary research collaboration with colleagues in epidemiology, anthropology, kinesiology, nursing, rehabilitation and radiation sciences and other medical sub-specialties.

• Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky and Justin D. Crane, Daniel I. Ogborn, Colleen Cupido, Simon Melov, Alan Hubbard, Jacqueline M. Bourgeois' paper “Massage Therapy Attenuates Inflammatory Signaling After Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage” was recently published in Science Translational Medicine February 3, 2012.
  
  

• The Department of Pediatrics is very happy to announce that Dr. Anthony Chan as been named as the McMaster Children’s Hospital/Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Chair in Pediatric Thrombosis and Hemostasis. As Chair, Anthony Chan will help in the development of a collaborative research program between McMaster' Children’s Hospital and McMaster University, in the area of thrombosis and hemostatis.

Recent events

Fusch Lab at the35th Annual Perinatal Investigators Meeting in Kingston, ON.

Dr. Fusch's lab presented a strong showing at this conference with 4 abstracts including 3 platform oral presentations. Their work on the development of ex-vivo placental perfusion, as well a fortified breast milk supplement for very low birth weight infants was well received and generated a lot of discussion.
