National endoscopy guidelines

The Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) has published its first national guidelines for endoscopy services in Canada, a valuable step in ensuring patient safety and quality care.

"Our top priorities are patient safety and quality service wherever endoscopic service is delivered in Canada," said Dr. David Armstrong, associate professor of gastroenterology, member of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute, and chair of the CAG endoscopy committee. "Having national guidelines in place will be an invaluable tool for endoscopists and facilities across the country to achieve continuous improvements and best use of resources towards patient safety and care."

More than 1.6 million endoscopic procedures — including screening for colon cancer — are conducted in Canada every year.
